Lakeview House

Located at Reynolds Mountain just north of Asheville, the Lakeview House is nestled on the side of the mountain with expansive views overlooking Beaver Lake, downtown Asheville, and the surrounding mountains. Our clients wanted a home that hugged the landscape, had ample natural light, and was inspired by Asheville’s regional architectural character. However, on the interior they wanted to fuse this more traditional style with a modern contemporary language.
The house is primarily two stories with the master suite on the third floor. The extremely steep site was challenging, but it allowed us to bend the shallow footprint along the site’s contours maximizing both views and daylighting. Cutting the home into the mountain, allowed the main floor to sit above the landscape and rise above the majestic trees on the downslope. This level includes the garage, primary living spaces, mudroom, and study. We designed these single depth spaces to allow daylight to fill the rooms from both sides. The numerous operable windows can open and provide natural cross ventilation throughout the home. To help protect the home from weather and sun exposure, the roof was designed with deep overhangs. These overhangs help shade the windows during the summer.
The lower level includes guest bedrooms, a loft for kids, sitting room, and a lower-level family room with a built-in bar. On the west end of the lower level, the hallway leads to a spacious exercise room that includes a half-court basketball court with solid maple flooring. South-facing decks and porches provide additional outdoor space for year-round enjoyment.
With a house of this scale, energy efficiency is a high priority. As with all our projects, we start with a tight building envelope, high quality materials and insulation that exceeds code. We also integrated a geothermal heat pump system to greatly improve the energy efficiency of the mechanical system, lowering annual heating and cooling costs.
The Lakeside House is a great example of how to take advantage of a steep site. Despite its grand scale, the linear design creates a series of beautiful human scaled rooms that feel comfortable and cozy. We are also grateful of the hard work and fine craftsmanship of Tyner Construction.
